Shimla MC Set to Fill 464 Vacancies, Regularisation of Staff Gets Approval

Shimla: Facing a growing shortage of staff, the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) is preparing to begin the recruitment process for 464 vacant posts, a move expected to strengthen civic services across the city.

The announcement was made by Municipal Commissioner Bhupinder Attri during the corporation’s monthly General House meeting, which was chaired by Mayor Surinder Chauhan.

During the meeting, members were informed that the civic body currently has 464 vacancies against a sanctioned strength of 1,083 posts. These include 948 category-wise posts and 135 personal posts, highlighting the scale of the staffing gap faced by the corporation.

The issue was raised by Nabha ward councillor Simi Nanda, who sought details about the vacant positions and the status of recruitment. Responding to the query, Attri said the matter had already been taken up with the Director of Urban Development. He explained that under a state government notification issued in August 2023, the recruitment process falls under the jurisdiction of the Director, Urban Development.

Attri said the corporation is awaiting approval from the state government, following which the recruitment process for the vacant posts will be initiated.

In another significant decision, the General House approved a proposal to regularise the services of daily wage workers, contingent-paid employees and contractual staff working with the Municipal Corporation. The move is expected to provide greater job security and stability to many employees who have been serving the civic body for years.

The twin decisions—filling long-pending vacancies and moving ahead with staff regularisation—are expected to boost workforce strength and improve the delivery of municipal services in Shimla.
