Himachal MLAs to Get Official District-Specific Flags, Fulfilling Long-Standing Demand
Members of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly will soon have official flags of their own, with each district being represented through a unique design. The announcement was made by Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania on Thursday, the final day of the monsoon session, marking the acceptance of a demand that legislators had been pursuing for some time.
According to the Speaker, the Assembly Secretariat will issue a formal notification within the next week, paving the way for the introduction of official flags for MLAs. The initiative is aimed at giving elected representatives an official symbol that reflects the district they represent.
The demand had first gained momentum during the previous budget session when several legislators raised the issue in the House. They argued that while senior government officials such as the Chief Secretary, Secretaries, Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police are entitled to official flags, elected representatives of the people did not enjoy a similar distinction.
MLAs maintained that an official flag would serve as a symbol of their public office and help identify them during government functions, official visits and public engagements. They contended that as direct representatives of the electorate, they too should be accorded a recognisable emblem linked to their role.
With the Speaker’s latest announcement, that long-pending request has now received approval. The proposed district-specific designs are expected to give each flag a distinct identity, highlighting the unique character and heritage of the constituency or district represented by the legislator.
The Assembly Secretariat is expected to complete the formalities in the coming days, after which work on the design and issuance of the flags will begin. Once implemented, the initiative will add a new visual identity to the state’s elected representatives while strengthening their association with the districts they serve.
