10th Annual Inter-College Sports Meet Kicks Off at UHF Nauni

Fantastic teamwork and outstanding individual performances marked the commencement of the 10th Annual Inter-College Sports, Games and Athletic Meet at Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry on Monday. The four-day event aims to promote holistic development and physical fitness among students and has witnessed enthusiastic participation from 390 students representing the university’s four constituent colleges: the College of Horticulture and College of Forestry at Nauni (main campus), and the Colleges of Horticulture and Forestry at Neri and Thunag.

The event was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, who emphasized the importance of extracurricular activities in shaping well-rounded individuals and fostering qualities essential for personal and professional success. He highlighted how sports nurture leadership, teamwork, time management and decision-making skills, and encouraged students to pursue sports not only competitively but also as a lifelong habit for maintaining physical and mental well-being.

Calling upon students to spread a strong message against drug abuse, Prof. Chandel said that sports are the best medium to channel youthful energy into positive outcomes. Participation in sports, he added, helps maintain both a healthy body and a healthy mind while instilling strong moral values.

Earlier, Dr. H.P. Sankhyan, Dean of Students’ Welfare, welcomed the Chief Guest and participants. He emphasized the value of sportsmanship and encouraged students to embrace the broader life lessons that come through athletic engagement. He also briefed attendees about the university’s efforts to promote extracurricular participation alongside academics.

This year, students are participating in a wide range of events, including track and field competitions such as 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m races, along with relays (4x100m and 4x400m). Field events include Shot Put, Javelin Throw, Discus Throw, Long Jump, High Jump and Triple Jump. Team sports such as Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Kabaddi, Badminton, Table Tennis and Chess are also being contested, while Kho-Kho and Cricket have been introduced this year. Cumulative scores from all events will determine the overall championship winners.

In a dominant display in the team events, the College of Horticulture defeated Thunag in the Women’s Kabaddi final by a score of 51–15. In Men’s Kabaddi, Horticulture defeated Thunag while Neri beat Forestry to set up a final clash with Horticulture. In Men’s Basketball, Neri defeated Forestry while Horticulture beat Thunag, and the final will now be played between Neri and Horticulture. In Women’s Basketball, Horticulture defeated Neri while Forestry beat Thunag. In Men’s Cricket, Horticulture beat Neri while Forestry triumphed over Thunag. In Women’s Cricket, Thunag defeated Neri while Forestry beat Horticulture.

In the individual women’s events, Ishita from Horticulture secured first place in the 500m race, while Harshita and Manvi from Forestry stood second and third respectively. In the 1500m race, Diipanshi from Forestry stood first, followed by Kshma from Horticulture and Sujhani from Thunag. In Shot Put, Ridhi from Thunag came first, while Aastha from Horticulture and Garima from Forestry secured the next positions. In Javelin Throw, Aarushi from Forestry secured first place, followed by Ridhi from Thunag and Sakshi from Horticulture. In the 100m race, Manya from Forestry came first, while Muskaan and Navdeep from Thunag secured second and third positions respectively. In Discus Throw, Harshit from Forestry stood first, while Aarushi from Forestry and Anriya from Thunag came second and third.

In the men’s individual events, Anish from Neri secured first place in Discus Throw, while Prateek and Pushkar from Forestry came second and third respectively. In the 200m race, Harnam from Horticulture stood first, followed by Arsh from Forestry and Avesh from Neri. In the 5000m race, Vrishank Thakur from Forestry secured first place, while Vikram Singh from Neri and Tejas from Horticulture came second and third respectively. In Javelin Throw, Prashant from Forestry stood first, while Avishakar and Anish from Neri secured second and third places. In the 800m race, Abhishek and Ram Babu from Forestry secured the first two positions, while Yajur from Horticulture came third. In Shot Put, Pushkar and Sagar from Forestry bagged the top two positions, while Chandan from Horticulture came third. In the 1500m race, Abhishek from Forestry came first, followed by Vikram from Neri and Anshwan from Forestry in third place.

The sports meet will continue over the next three days with more exciting competitions and displays of athletic excellence.
