Karsog Residents Take a Stand: Entire Nagar Panchayat Election Faces Boycott

In an extraordinary show of unity, residents of Karsog have come together to boycott the ongoing Nagar Panchayat elections, pushing all candidates to withdraw their nomination papers and throwing the entire election process into uncertainty.

The turning point came late Sunday evening at a public meeting held in Purana Bazaar (Old Market). Residents from all seven wards of Nagar Panchayat Karsog gathered to voice their concerns, and by the end of the meeting, a unanimous decision was reached: every candidate who had filed nominations would step aside during the official withdrawal period.

Karsog’s civic body consists of seven wards. Even before Sunday’s meeting, Ward 7 (Baral) had already announced an election boycott, which meant no nominations were filed there at all. Ward 1 saw only a single nomination, but following the residents’ collective decision, that candidate too is expected to withdraw.

What made the situation even more striking was that many of the candidates themselves attended the meeting and publicly announced their withdrawal on the spot. Those unable to be present later conveyed their agreement, assuring residents that they would also officially withdraw their papers in the coming days.

Underlying this dramatic move is years of frustration. Residents and candidates alike cited mounting dissatisfaction with the Nagar Panchayat, alleging that multiple taxes were imposed on the public without any visible or meaningful development in return. This long-simmering resentment has now resulted in a complete rejection of the electoral process.

Beyond the boycott, locals have expressed a clear demand for dissolving the Nagar Panchayat altogether and reverting to a Gram Panchayat system. According to community members, this change would bring governance closer to the people and ensure greater accountability and better-targeted development at the grassroots level.

With the election now hanging in the balance, Karsog finds itself in a rare and unprecedented situation. Everything hinges on whether all candidates formally withdraw their nominations on the designated day. Only then will it become clear how election authorities respond to this collective protest and what the future of local governance in Karsog will look like.
