Himachal High Court Takes a Green Turn with Carpooling and Flexible Work

In a thoughtful move towards saving fuel and promoting efficiency, the Himachal Pradesh High Court has decided to introduce carpooling among its judges, while also allowing partial work-from-home options for staff.

The decision comes at a time when institutions across the country are adopting austerity measures to cut down on fuel consumption and optimize resources. According to a circular issued by the Registrar General, the initiative aligns with recent guidelines shared by the Ministry of Personnel and Training (May 12) and the Chief Justice of India (May 15).

Currently, the High Court has 12 judges, including the Chief Justice, and all of them have collectively agreed to adopt carpooling for their daily commute between home and court. This step is expected not only to reduce fuel usage but also set an example of responsible resource management.

Alongside this, the court has introduced a flexible working arrangement for its staff. Up to 50% of employees in each section of the Registry can now work from home for a maximum of two days a week. To ensure smooth functioning, each section will prepare a weekly roster in advance, carefully balancing in-office and remote work.

However, the flexibility comes with responsibility. Employees working from home have been instructed to stay accessible by phone at all times and be ready to report to the office if needed. At the same time, Registrars have been given the authority to review the arrangement and make changes if it affects productivity or workflow.

This combined approach of carpooling and flexible working reflects the High Court’s effort to strike a balance between efficiency, environmental responsibility, and smooth functioning, marking a small but meaningful step towards sustainable governance.
