Exciting Changes Ahead for Horticulture in Himachal with Shiva Project

The Shiva Project is bringing transformative changes to the horticulture sector in seven districts of Himachal Pradesh. With a total budget of ₹1292 crore, funded by the Asian Development Bank and the state government, significant progress has already been made. Solar fencing is planned for 4000 hectares of land, with a target to complete 2750 hectares by June 2025. So far, 828 hectares have been fenced.

Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi has emphasized timely completion of solar fencing and field preparation, instructing penalties for delays. He also directed Nauni Solan University to provide high-quality plum and Japanese persimmon plants to farmers. These directives were issued during the third meeting of the governing council of the HP Shiva Project.

Farmers to Receive Plum and Japanese Persimmon Plants

To boost horticulture in Himachal Pradesh, Nauni University will distribute 40,000 plum and Japanese persimmon plants by February 2026, aiming for a total of 100,000 plants by 2027. Quality checks are being conducted at the molecular lab in Neru, approved by the Asian Development Bank.

Additionally, samples from farmers’ fields are being tested, with reports available within 7-8 days. The minister has instructed the procurement of water-soluble nutrients and pesticides from branded companies through tender processes. High-tech spray kits, pumps, and other equipment will also be procured with HPMC’s cooperation.

Ensuring Quality Through Regular Inspections

An integrated digital platform is being developed under the HP Shiva Project, offering 75 AI-based services such as plant protection, disease management, soil testing, moisture level monitoring, weather information, production tracing and tracking, capacity building, and marketing. Cluster farmers will also benefit from carbon credits generated from their orchards. The minister has ordered regular inspections to ensure the quality of drip irrigation work and immediate penalties for delays.
