From Tea to Trout: Himachal’s District Treasures Set to Drive Rural Prosperity
Himachal Pradesh is taking a significant step towards strengthening its rural economy by spotlighting the unique products that define each district. Through the One District Three Product (ODtP) Programme, the state government aims to give special recognition to local specialties while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities across the state.
After a detailed assessment of market demand, economic potential and local relevance, the government has identified 36 products—three from each district—that reflect Himachal’s rich cultural, agricultural and artisanal heritage. These include Kangra Tea, Kinnauri Shawls, Chamba Chappal, Kullu Cap, Trout Fish, Chilgoza, White Maize, Turmeric, Mushrooms, Dragon Fruit, Pharmaceuticals and Seabuckthorn, among many others.
The initiative celebrates the diversity of the state’s districts. Bilaspur has been recognized for Ginger, Sericulture and Fisheries, while Chamba’s iconic Chamba Chappal, White Maize and Wool have found a place on the list. Kinnaur’s famous shawls and chilgoza, Kangra’s internationally known tea and miniature paintings, and Mandi’s traditional Sepu Badi and handicrafts are among the products expected to receive focused support and promotion.
To help local producers expand their businesses, the state government has already organized three Vendor Development Programmes and five Employment Development Programmes. These efforts have focused on improving entrepreneurial skills and building connections between producers, buyers and industries.
The next major milestone under the programme will be a grand exhibition and Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet scheduled for October 2026. The event is expected to bring together producers, exporters, retailers, investors and industry representatives on a common platform, opening doors for new partnerships and stronger market access. Officials believe this will not only boost sales but also encourage value addition and strengthen local supply chains.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the state’s upcoming industrial policy will offer a comprehensive package of incentives for enterprises associated with the identified products. Businesses can expect benefits such as land rebates, stamp duty concessions, subsidized electricity, SGST reimbursement and priority sector status, making it easier for local industries to grow and attract investment.
The government also plans to focus heavily on branding and marketing support, helping producers showcase their products beyond state borders. Efforts will include onboarding local businesses onto leading e-commerce platforms and supporting participation in trade fairs, exhibitions and buyer-seller meets across the country.
According to the Chief Minister, the ODtP programme is about much more than economic growth. It is also an effort to preserve Himachal Pradesh’s traditional skills, indigenous products and cultural identity while generating employment, increasing rural incomes and creating new opportunities for youth and women.
As Himachal moves ahead with this ambitious initiative, products that have long been a part of the state’s identity could soon find larger national and international markets, bringing prosperity to local communities while keeping their heritage alive.
