From Prison Cells to Online Shelves on Flipcart: A New Path of Hope for Inmates in Himachal

In a meaningful step towards rehabilitation and self-reliance, prisoners lodged in jails across Himachal Pradesh will soon see their handmade products reaching homes across the country. Items crafted by inmates—such as handicrafts, handmade garments, furniture, and other goods—will now be sold on Flipkart’s online marketplace, opening up a nationwide customer base for their work.

To make this initiative possible, Himkara Unnayan Samiti, functioning under the Himachal Pradesh Department of Prisons and Correctional Services, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Flipkart. The collaboration aims to provide inmates with skill development opportunities and financial empowerment, while also encouraging their reintegration into mainstream society.

For a long time, the department had been exploring ways to sell prisoner-made products through online platforms. Until now, these items were sold offline and displayed at various sales-cum-exhibitions organised by the department. The tie-up with Flipkart marks a major expansion of these efforts, bringing visibility and accessibility on an entirely new scale.

Speaking on the occasion, Director General of Prison and Correctional Services, Abhishek Trivedi, described the initiative as a transformative move. “This step reflects our commitment to bringing positive change in the lives of prisoners and enabling them to become self-reliant and responsible members of society,” he said.

He further explained that inmates will receive support beyond just sales. Assistance will be provided in packaging, branding, and logistics to ensure the products meet market standards and remain competitive. In addition, prisoners will be trained according to current market demands, helping them acquire skills that can lead to better self-employment opportunities after their release.

Sharing statistics, Trivedi noted that Himachal Pradesh’s jails currently house around 3,000 inmates, including nearly 1,000 convicted prisoners and about 2,000 undertrial prisoners. The income generated through online sales will go directly to the inmates, helping improve their financial condition and overall quality of life. “This initiative will also play a vital role in their social rehabilitation,” he added.

The occasion also marked the 12th meeting of the Himkara Unnayan Samiti and the 20th meeting of the Prisoners Welfare Fund. Officers and staff representatives from all jails across the state participated in these meetings.

During the event, the DG’s Disc Award was presented to staff members of Sub Jail, Nalagarh, in recognition of their courage and exemplary service. The awardees included Assistant Superintendent of Jail Nishant Kumar and warders Sikandar Gathania, Kamal Kumar, Prince Rana, Rishabh Chauhan, and Aman Kumar.

This initiative stands as a powerful example of how correctional institutions can go beyond confinement—offering dignity, skills, and hope for a better future to those behind bars.
