Tourist Rush Brings Record Traffic Inflow to Shimla, Police Manage Congestion Amid Road Repairs

Shimla witnessed an unprecedented traffic rush during the ongoing summer tourist season and weekend holiday surge, with nearly 18,821 vehicles entering the hill station through the Shoghi barrier over May 9 and 10, placing heavy pressure on the town’s traffic management system.

According to a press release issued by the District Police Shimla, the situation was further aggravated by ongoing patchwork and repair work being carried out by the Public Works Department on the Sanjauli route between Victory Tunnel and Lakkad Bazar.

Despite the unusually high vehicular load, Shimla Police managed to maintain relatively smooth traffic movement across the town through coordinated regulation, real-time monitoring and strategic diversions at sensitive congestion points.

Traffic diversions were implemented at several key locations including Shoghi, Tutikandi, Victory Tunnel, Dhali Tunnel and Dhali Chowk to ease pressure on the city’s main routes.

Police personnel and officers remained continuously deployed in the field to regulate traffic and minimise inconvenience for both residents and tourists visiting the hill station during the peak rush period.

The police department stated that officers and jawans carried out their duties with “full readiness, patience and dedication” while handling the increased tourist inflow.

Officials added that continuous monitoring and prompt response by the Traffic Branch played a key role in maintaining traffic control despite ongoing road repair work and rising vehicular density across the city.

The district police also appreciated the cooperation extended by local residents, commuters and tourists during the traffic regulation exercise.

Shimla Police reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe and smooth travel arrangements for residents and visitors during the ongoing tourist season and upcoming holiday rush periods.
