Himachal turns into a winter wonderland amid fresh snowfall
Himachal Pradesh has embraced its iconic winter charm as dark clouds blanket the state, bringing fresh snowfall to its higher altitudes. Shimla, Kufri, and Narkanda woke up to a magical white cover, with light to moderate snow gracing the region. Temperatures have plummeted, marking the onset of a biting cold wave.
The Shimla district administration reported, “Light to moderate snowfall continues in the middle to higher reaches of the Kumarsein subdivision.” Narkanda and its surrounding areas received 1 to 3 inches of fresh snow, while the lower regions experienced intermittent light rain. However, the snow has disrupted road connectivity, with NH05 blocked in Narkanda. Traffic has been diverted via Sainj, Luhri, and Sunni, and road clearance efforts are underway with deployed machinery, including two JCBs and a dozer.
In areas between Chharabra and Kufri-Fagu, light to moderate snowfall persists, making roads slippery and travel risky. The upper reaches, including Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, Kullu, and Kangra districts, have witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall, turning landscapes into a pristine white wonderland.
The Rohtang Tunnel, Keylong, and Sisu in Lahaul-Spiti are grappling with heavy snow, creating hazardous conditions. Reports of stranded vehicles have prompted the administration to issue strict advisories against unnecessary travel. In Kinnaur, high-altitude villages are buried under thick layers of snow, with frost and reduced visibility posing challenges for agriculture and livestock.
In the lower regions, Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Hamirpur have been drenched by rain, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms that have intensified the cold. Kangra and Una experienced isolated light showers.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued snowfall in the higher reaches and light to moderate rain in lower areas over the next 24 hours. Frost conditions are expected to persist, prompting farmers and residents to safeguard crops, cattle, and pets.
Authorities have activated Disaster Control Rooms across affected districts to assist residents and tourists. Travelers heading to snow-prone areas are advised to carry emergency supplies and remain prepared for delays or road closures.
As Himachal Pradesh revels in its winter glory, the picturesque snow-covered peaks remind us of both the beauty and challenges of life in this mountainous paradise. Residents and visitors are urged to stay updated with weather reports and prioritize safety during this snowy season.
