Himachal’s Fruits Take Flight: First Cherry and Plum Export Heads to Oman

In a proud moment for Himachal Pradesh’s horticulture community, the state has taken a significant step onto the global stage with its first-ever export of cherries and plums to Oman. Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi flagged off the inaugural consignment from Chandigarh, marking a new chapter for local fruit growers.

The shipment, consisting of 400 kilograms each of cherries and plums, has been sourced from six progressive farmers from the Jadol-Tikkar and Bagi regions of Shimla district. For these orchardists, the export represents not just a milestone, but also the promise of better prices and wider recognition for their produce.

Speaking at the occasion, the Minister highlighted the growing demand for Himachal’s fruits in Middle Eastern and Gulf countries. He noted that these markets offer immense potential for expanding exports and improving farmers’ incomes. “This is just the beginning,” he said, expressing optimism that more fruits, including apples, would soon find their way into international markets.

Negi also encouraged farmers to focus on quality and adopt practices suited to global standards. He stressed that building a strong identity for Himachal’s fruits abroad will depend on consistency and high-quality produce.

The initiative has been made possible through a joint effort by the Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation (HPMC) and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). With financial and logistical support from these agencies, the costs of grading, packaging, and quality testing were taken care of, ensuring that farmers could access international markets without additional burden.

Air cargo has been chosen to transport the fruits, allowing them to reach Oman quickly while maintaining freshness and premium quality—key factors for success in overseas markets.

This achievement follows a workshop held earlier this month in Theog, where farmers, officials, and experts discussed strategies to promote stone fruit exports. The decision to send the first consignment emerged from those discussions, and its successful dispatch is already being seen as a turning point.

Officials, including HPMC Managing Director D.C. Rana, General Manager Sunny Sharma, and APEDA Regional Officer Harpreet Singh, were present to witness the launch of this landmark initiative.

With this first export taking off, hopes are high that Himachal Pradesh will soon establish itself as a reliable player in the global fruit market—bringing greater prosperity to its orchardists along the way.
