Heavy rain and snowfall to lash Himachal: IMD Issues yellow alert
Himachal Pradesh is set to experience a prolonged spell of wet weather starting the night of February 25, 2025, continuing until noon or evening on March 1, 2025. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rain and snowfall are expected at isolated places, particularly on February 26, 27, and 28, prompting weather alerts across the state.
This weather activity is attributed to a fresh Western Disturbance, currently positioned as a cyclonic circulation over northern Iran and extending through various atmospheric levels. This system is expected to pull in significant moisture from the Arabian Sea, creating favorable conditions for widespread precipitation across the Western Himalayan region.
Weather Forecast and Impacted Areas
Under the influence of this disturbance, widespread rainfall and snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are anticipated from midnight on February 25 until noon on March 1. The heaviest precipitation is expected between February 26 and 28, with isolated places likely to witness very heavy rainfall and snowfall.
High-altitude districts such as Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and the upper reaches of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, and Sirmaur are forecasted to receive light to moderate snowfall throughout this period. However, Lahaul-Spiti on February 27 and 28 and Kinnaur on February 28 may experience isolated heavy snowfall, prompting a yellow alert for these areas.
Meanwhile, lower districts like Solan, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Una, and parts of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kullu are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
Alert Levels and Tourist Destinations Affected
The IMD has also issued an orange alert for heavy rain and snowfall over Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi from February 26 to 28, with the possibility of very heavy precipitation on February 27. Shimla and Sirmaur may experience isolated heavy snowfall on February 27 and 28.
Additionally, yellow alerts have been issued for Una, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur on February 27 and 28, while Solan is likely to experience similar conditions on February 28. Popular tourist destinations such as Kufri, Narkanda, Manali, Solang Valley, Dalhousie, and Sissu are expected to receive light snowfall, with occasional moderate spells from the morning of February 26 to noon on March 1. Shimla city and its surrounding areas may also witness light rain and snowfall.
Travel and Safety Advisory
Given the expected heavy precipitation, residents and travelers are advised to take necessary precautions. Slippery roads could lead to skidding, low visibility, traffic congestion, and potential accidents. Essential services and outdoor businesses might also face disruptions in some areas.
Authorities recommend driving with caution, limiting outdoor activities, and adhering to safety advisories issued by the state government and concerned departments. Those planning to visit hill stations should be prepared for sudden weather changes and possible roadblocks due to snowfall.
Stay updated with official weather alerts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of intense weather activity.
