Heavy Rain Alert Across Himachal as Active Monsoon Set to Persist Till July 10

Himachal Pradesh is bracing for another week of active monsoon conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall across the state until July 10. Authorities have issued an Orange Alert for several districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rain and the possibility of landslides, flash floods and road disruptions in vulnerable areas.

According to the IMD forecast, most parts of the state are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall between July 6 and July 8, with isolated locations expected to receive intense downpours. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is particularly likely on July 6 and 7, while some areas may continue to receive heavy rain on July 8. The wet spell is expected to persist on July 9 and 10, keeping weather conditions unsettled across the hill state.

The weather department has issued an Orange Alert for Mandi and Sirmaur districts on July 6, while Chamba, Kangra and Sirmaur will remain under Orange Alert on July 7. Several other districts, including Shimla, are under a Yellow Alert, indicating the possibility of adverse weather conditions that may affect normal activities.

Rainfall continued intermittently in many parts of the state, including Shimla, on Saturday. While the showers have provided relief from humid conditions, they have also heightened concerns over landslides, falling rocks, waterlogging and road blockages—common challenges during the monsoon season in the state’s mountainous terrain.

The ongoing monsoon has already been significantly wetter than usual. Between July 1 and July 3, Himachal Pradesh recorded 30.9 mm of rainfall against a normal average of 15 mm, marking an excess of 106 percent during the period.

Among the districts, Kinnaur recorded the highest surplus rainfall at 423 percent above normal, followed by Kullu (195%), Sirmaur (143%), Solan (140%), Una (130%), Kangra (125%), Shimla (117%) and Chamba (107%). Mandi, Hamirpur and Bilaspur also reported above-normal rainfall, while Lahaul-Spiti remained the only district to receive below-average precipitation, recording 30 percent less rainfall than normal.

With heavy rain likely in the coming days, authorities have advised residents, especially those living in landslide-prone and low-lying areas, to remain alert and follow weather advisories. Travelers have also been urged to check road conditions before undertaking journeys, as intense rainfall could affect connectivity in several parts of the state.
