Cold wave sweeps Himachal: Yellow alert issued for fog and freezing temperatures

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for cold wave conditions and dense fog in the plains of Bilaspur and Mandi, spanning from November 27 to 29. The state is preparing for a sharp drop in temperatures, with dry weather expected throughout the period. Snowfall is predicted for the higher mountain areas on November 30 and December 2.

Himachal Pradesh is experiencing the season’s coldest temperatures as the cold wave tightens its grip, with Lahaul-Spiti recording the coldest night of the season. In Tabo, the mercury plunged to a frigid -10.4°C, the lowest temperature reported in the state so far. Water sources, streams, and waterfalls in the region have frozen, turning the area into a frozen wonderland that is attracting visitors despite the harsh conditions. Other areas of Lahaul-Spiti, including Kukumseri at -5.6°C, Keylong at -3.6°C, and Samdho at -1.5°C, also saw freezing temperatures. Kalpa in Kinnaur recorded a low of 0.2°C, while Reckong Peo and Manali reported 2°C.

Shimla, the state capital, registered a minimum temperature of 7.4°C, showing a notable dip compared to usual temperatures. Narkanda saw a low of 2.8°C, Kufri recorded 3.5°C, and Bharmour dipped to 4.5°C. With a statewide average minimum temperature 0.7°C below normal, the region is bracing for even colder conditions. Plains and low-lying areas like Una, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur experienced temperatures between 6.5°C and 7.6°C.

Residents in tribal and higher-altitude areas are grappling with the extreme cold, relying on traditional methods to stay warm. The weather department has also issued warnings for travelers, particularly those in fog-prone regions, as visibility is expected to significantly decrease in the coming days.
