AIDWA Protest Against Shifting of Gynaecology OPD in Shimla
Shimla’s streets echoed with concern on Monday as members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) gathered to protest the government’s decision to move the gynaecology OPD from Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH) to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC).
The protesters argued that IGMC, already struggling to meet basic patient needs, would be further burdened by the shift. They stressed that KNH has long provided comprehensive gynaecology services—including diagnostic tests—making the move unnecessary and inconvenient for women.
Adding to the emotion of the protest was the hospital’s legacy. KNH, a 102-year-old institution named after freedom fighter Kamla Nehru, has stood as a symbol of women’s empowerment and healthcare. “It is unfortunate that the government is trying to damage an institution named after her,” one protester said.
For many, the issue is not just about medical facilities—it is about preserving history, honoring women’s contributions, and ensuring accessible healthcare for future generations.
