CPRI Scientists Hit the Fields to Help Farmers Protect Soil Health
In a bid to safeguard Himachal’s fertile land, the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla, is rolling out a grassroots campaign to guide farmers on the balanced use of fertilisers. The goal is simple yet vital—protect the soil from damage caused by overuse and ensure farming remains sustainable for generations to come.
For the next 45 days, 12 dedicated teams from CPRI will be out in villages, meeting farmers face-to-face. Through field demonstrations, interactive sessions, and village-level meetings, they’ll share practical tips on crop planning and fertiliser use. “We want farmers to understand that using fertilisers in the right quantity is not just good for the soil, but also for their productivity and income,” explained Brijesh Singh, Director of CPRI.
The initiative is part of the “Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav” (My Village, My Pride) programme, extending beyond Himachal to states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya, and Bihar. With catchy slogans, awareness drives, and continuous dialogue, the campaign aims to spark behavioral change at the grassroots level.
Experts believe this effort will not only improve soil health but also cut cultivation costs, boost yields, and ultimately enhance farmers’ prosperity. By promoting sustainable agriculture, the campaign is planting the seeds for a healthier environment and a stronger farming community.
