Himachal University Embraces NEP: Semester System to Reshape Student Life

Big changes are on the horizon for college students in Himachal Pradesh. Starting with the 2026–27 academic session, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, will shift all undergraduate courses in affiliated colleges from the traditional annual system to a semester-based structure—bringing classrooms in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.

The move, announced by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mahavir Singh, follows the state government’s directive earlier this month. Principals across the state have now been asked to prepare for the transition, which promises more flexibility and opportunities for students.

Under NEP, learners will benefit from multiple entry and exit options, stream-based degrees, skill development integration, and a blend of curricular and co-curricular activities. Students will also have the chance to earn up to 40% of credits through online platforms like SWAYAM, opening doors to diverse learning experiences.

The university has already drafted a new curriculum and credit framework to align with NEP, emphasizing research, innovation, and holistic education. For students, this means not just exams twice a year, but a more dynamic, skill-oriented journey that prepares them for the future.

With this step, HPU is signaling a shift towards modern, flexible education—one that places students at the center of learning and equips them for both careers and life beyond the classroom.
