Reduction of import duty on apples from EU to 20 percent is a blow to Himachal farmers : Rathore

Congress MLA from Theog and AICC spokesperson Kuldeep Singh Rathore has raised strong concerns over the Centre’s fruit import policy, warning that it threatens the livelihood of Himachal Pradesh’s apple growers.

Rathore described the reduction of import duty on apples from European countries to 20 percent as a direct blow to local farmers. For Himachal, where horticulture is the backbone of the economy, this decision feels like an injustice. He reminded that similar concessions were earlier given to New Zealand, and now European imports are being allowed at cheaper rates, putting domestic growers at risk.

With Himachal’s apple economy valued at nearly ₹5,000 crore, farmers are already struggling against rising costs, unpredictable weather, and unstable markets. Rathore cautioned that cheaper imported apples will only worsen their situation, cutting into their earnings and weakening local markets.

He accused the Centre of pursuing policies that favor foreign interests over Indian farmers, claiming such moves are driven by political pressure rather than concern for hill states. He also expressed fear that future trade agreements could further erode protections for domestic growers, making survival even harder for small farmers.

Reiterating his demand, Rathore urged the government to impose a 100 percent import duty on foreign fruits and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honor promises made to Himachal’s apple growers.

As India negotiates trade deals with Europe, the voices from Himachal’s orchards grow louder—seeking protection, fairness, and recognition for the farmers who keep the state’s economy alive.
