Grassroots Excellence: Himachal Panchayats Earn National Recognition in 2026 Awards

Himachal Pradesh’s Panchayati Raj Institutions have made the state proud by delivering an impressive performance at the National Panchayat Awards 2026. The awards ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India, took place on June 3, 2026, at the SCOPE Convention Centre in New Delhi, bringing together top-performing Panchayats from across the country.

Among the standout achievers was Gram Panchayat Shansha from the Lahaul block in Lahaul & Spiti district, which secured the prestigious first prize in the category of “Socially Just & Socially Secured Panchayat.” The Panchayat was awarded a cash prize of ₹1 crore in recognition of its remarkable work in improving the quality of life in a remote tribal region.

Shansha earned this recognition through its focused efforts on social security, job creation, healthcare access, and inclusive governance. It ensured that eligible residents received MGNREGA job cards, expanded coverage under the National Social Assistance Programme, and facilitated the distribution of Ayushman Bharat health cards. The Panchayat also strengthened services under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and actively encouraged women’s participation through Mahila Gram Sabhas, setting a strong example of people-centric governance.

Adding to the state’s success, Gram Panchayat Lohardi from the Balh block in Mandi district secured the joint third prize in the “Clean & Green Panchayat” category and received a cash award of ₹25 lakh. Lohardi stood out for its consistent commitment to environmental sustainability and cleanliness.

The Panchayat achieved 100% toilet coverage and maintained its Open Defecation Free (ODF) status. It also promoted the widespread use of LPG as a clean cooking fuel, introduced an effective door-to-door waste collection and segregation system, and encouraged composting and organic waste management practices. Furthermore, Lohardi invested in solar-powered infrastructure and actively involved the community in environmental conservation efforts, making sustainability a shared responsibility.

The awards were presented by Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, the Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, in the presence of senior ministry officials and representatives from across India. On behalf of Himachal Pradesh, the honours were received by Shri Raghav Sharma, IAS, Director of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, along with Shri Prashant, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Shansha, and other officials from the department.

The state government and the Panchayati Raj Department congratulated both Panchayats for their exemplary achievements. They highlighted that such recognitions reflect Himachal Pradesh’s consistent efforts towards promoting sustainable rural development, inclusive governance, and empowering communities at the grassroots level.

These awards not only celebrate individual successes but also underline how strong local leadership and community participation can bring meaningful change, even in the most challenging terrains.
