How Himachal is Empowering Women and Children with Compassion and Care

In Himachal Pradesh, a quiet revolution is taking place — one that’s shaping a future where women and children are not just supported, but truly empowered to lead fulfilling lives. The state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, is taking thoughtful and determined steps to build a more compassionate, equitable society through a series of transformative welfare initiatives.

From improving healthcare and education to ensuring financial stability and safety, the focus is clear: to give every woman and child the opportunity to thrive. And the results are already visible — the state’s sex ratio has improved significantly, rising from 947 in 2023 to 964 in 2024. This progress signals a shift in mindset, where the value of the girl child is being recognized and celebrated.

For young women from economically weaker backgrounds, financial security during marriage is a major concern. Through the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana and Mukhyamantri Shagun Yojana, over 16,000 girls have received assistance totaling more than Rs. 57 crore — a meaningful step in ensuring dignity and support as they begin new chapters in their lives.

Widowed women are also being given a chance to rebuild. The Widow Remarriage Scheme has extended financial assistance to 239 women, helping them re-enter society with respect and confidence.

Children without parental support are receiving focused attention too. Through the Mukhyamantri Sukh Aashray Yojana, nearly Rs. 26 crore has been dedicated to caring for orphaned children, while the Mukhyamantri Sukh Shiksha Yojana has enabled nearly 10,000 children to pursue their education in a nurturing and safe environment.

In a landmark move for gender equality, the state government amended the Himachal Pradesh Ceiling Land Holdings Act. This crucial step addresses historical imbalances in property rights and opens doors for women to gain financial independence — a stride forward in the journey toward social justice.

Another groundbreaking initiative, the Indira Gandhi Sukh Suraksha Yojana, supports the birth of the first two daughters in Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. By depositing Rs. 25,000 for each girl and offering life insurance coverage to parents, this scheme ensures both financial and emotional security for the most vulnerable.

Recognizing the challenges faced by working women, the government is also investing in 13 Working Women Hostels in key towns such as Solan, Baddi, and Palampur. Set to be built by 2026 with a budget of Rs. 132 crore, these hostels will provide safe, affordable accommodation — helping women pursue careers with confidence.

Each of these efforts reflects not just a policy decision, but a commitment to humanity. By investing in women and children today, Himachal Pradesh is planting the seeds for a society that values equality, opportunity, and dignity for all.
