Two-Day International Seminar on Heroine Archetypes Begins at IIAS Shimla

Experts explore Nāyikā Bheda and feminist reinterpretations in Indian theatre

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla inaugurated a two-day international seminar today on the theme “Heroine Archetypes in Indian Theatre: Modern Perspectives on Feminist Discourse.” The seminar commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp.

In the start Shri Mehar Chand Negi, Secretary, IIAS delivered the inaugural address and welcomed all the participants. Dr. Shaminaj Khan, Fellow at IIAS and the convener of the seminar, introduced the theme by highlighting the relevance of Nāyikā Bheda—classical classifications of heroines in Indian dramaturgy—as a vital point of inquiry in contemporary feminist discourse. She emphasized the need to examine how traditional heroine archetypes are being redefined in today’s cultural and theatrical landscapes.

Delivering the keynote address online, eminent Sanskrit scholar Professor Radhavallabha Tripathi (Former Vice Chancellor, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan) underlined how the Nāyikā framework is not only a dramatic device but also a cultural construct reflecting women’s roles across time. He elaborated on how classical figures are being reimagined through feminist lenses in modern performances.

The session was moderated by Shri Akhilesh Pathak, SPRO, IIAS, and the vote of thanks was presented by Shri Prem Chand, Consultant (Library).

The first day continued with three academic sessions chaired by Professor O. P. Sharma, Professor Uma Anantani, and Professor R.C. Shinha respectively. Scholars presented papers addressing the reinterpretation of Nayikas from classical Sanskrit plays, contemporary feminist theory, regional literature, and performative adaptations. Participants joined both in person and virtually from across India.

The seminar will conclude on 9 April with a valedictory session presided over by Professor Sachidananda Mohanty and other distinguished scholars.
