Sanjay Chauhan Elected to CPI(M) Central Committee: A Step Forward for Democratic Struggles

In a significant development at the 24th Party Congress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, former Shimla Mayor Sanjay Chauhan was elected as a member of the party’s Central Committee. The week-long congress, which began on April 2, concluded today with a strong resolve to combat growing communal forces and corporate-backed policies in the country.

The CPI(M) congress highlighted pressing issues such as the agrarian crisis and the need for a united democratic front to counter the RSS-BJP’s divisive ideology. Delegates passed resolutions calling for nationwide movements against the BJP’s pro-corporate and communal agenda, with a particular focus on mobilizing support for the upcoming workers’ and farmers’ strike on May 20.

In a key organizational change, veteran leader MA Baby has taken over as the party’s general secretary following the passing of former leader Sitaram Yechury last September. The congress reaffirmed its commitment to building a left-democratic alternative to safeguard the rights of workers, farmers, and marginalized communities.

Chauhan’s elevation to the Central Committee marks a new chapter in his political journey, reflecting his dedication to progressive politics and grassroots activism. His leadership is expected to strengthen the party’s efforts in Himachal Pradesh and beyond.
