Right-wing activists create chaos at an Eye store in Shimla; police intervene, case registered

What began as a routine day at a Lenskart showroom in Sanjauli quickly turned tense after a group of right-wing activists allegedly created a disturbance inside the store, prompting police action and raising concerns about communal harmony in the area.

According to officials, a case (No. 23/2026) has been registered at Sanjauli Police Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The complaint names members of the Dev Bhoomi Sangharsh Samiti, including Madan Thakur and Kalpana Sharma, along with 10 to 15 others, who are accused of entering the store without permission and raising religious slogans.

Shimla’s District Police Chief, Gaurav Singh, confirmed that authorities have taken the matter seriously. He stated that an investigation is underway and emphasized that any attempts to disrupt public order or disturb communal peace will be handled firmly.

Police sources revealed that the group allegedly shouted provocative slogans targeting a specific community. This reportedly created an uncomfortable and tense atmosphere inside the showroom, which is located near Vishal Megamart.

The incident may be connected to a recent internal guideline issued by the store’s management. Staff had reportedly been advised not to wear or display religious symbols, such as a tilak, while on duty—something that may have triggered the confrontation.

Authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. Meanwhile, police are continuing their investigation to identify everyone involved and piece together exactly what happened.
