Monsoon Remains Weak with 43% Less Rainfall this season
The monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh, which began on June 27, has been notably weak, with rainfall significantly below expectations. Since June 1, the state has received 43% less rainfall than average.
Despite the arrival of the southwest monsoon on June 27, the rainfall has been inconsistent, resulting in only 151.6 mm of rainfall between June 1 and July 21, compared to the normal 266.4 mm. All 12 districts in the state have recorded a shortfall in rainfall.
District-wise, Shimla saw a 24% deficit, Lahaul Spiti recorded a 74% shortfall, and Sirmaur experienced 58% less rainfall. Other districts also faced significant deficits: Chamba (52%), Kinnaur (51%), Una (50%), Hamirpur (47%), Solan (43%), Kullu (38%), and Kangra (28%).
Up to July 21, the state recorded a 36% decrease in rainfall for the month, with only 105.1 mm compared to the expected 165.3 mm. The Meteorological Department in Shimla has issued an orange alert for Tuesday, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in various regions. The department forecasts increased monsoon activity over the next 2 to 3 days, with widespread moderate rainfall expected across the state.
