It is most auspicious to hear the name of Chaitra month from the mouth of Gandharva community : Vidyanand Saraik
According to the ancient Indian tradition, the arrival of the new year i.e. Vikram Samvat is considered to be from Chaitra month. People consider it auspicious to hear the name of the first Chaitra month of this Vikram Samvat from the mouth of Gandharva community or Dholru. This tradition exists even in the changing environment. In Giri Ganga Valley which includes a large area of Sirmour and Shimla district, people of Gandharva community have been following this tradition since ancient times. Whereas in the Trigarta region, people of a caste called Dholru go from house to house and tell the name of the new year Chaitra month through songs. On the New Year, people happily donate flour, rice, ghee and Suhagiya etc. to them.
In a special conversation, the state’s well-known litterateur and Padma Shri Vidyanand Saraik told that Chaitra month has special importance in religious texts. Chaitra month is named after Chitra Nakshatra. Navratri falling in Chaitra month has special importance. Vikram Samvat begins on the first day of Navratri. On this day, Yudhishtra was coronated and the second Sikh Guru Angad Dev was born. According to the scriptural belief, Brahma created the universe on Chaitra Pratipada. Saraik says that the Sankranti of Chaitra month, which is called Bishudi, is the beginning of the New Year in Hinduism. People of the Gandharva community go to the local temple in the morning and play the Beul and congratulate the deity on the New Year. After that, people of this community go from house to house in their jurisdiction and tell people the name of Chaitra month through a special song and this process continues for the whole month till Baisakhi i.e. Bishu Sankranti. He told that people consider it auspicious to hear the name of Chaitra month from the mouth of Gandharva or Mangalmukhi caste people, but with time this tradition is disappearing and now people of this community are following this tradition at very few places. With time various ancient traditions are slowly disappearing.
