Opening New Doors: Skill Training Initiative to Empower Himachal’s Youth and Women
A wave of new opportunities is set to reach thousands across Himachal Pradesh as the state gears up to train and empower 2,420 young people and women under the Pradhan Mantri VIKAS (PM VIKAS) scheme.
At the heart of this initiative is the Himachal Pradesh Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (HPCED), which has been chosen by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs to lead the programme. For many participants, this is more than just training—it’s a chance to build confidence, careers, and independent livelihoods.
The programme places a strong focus on women, with 1,700 participants set to receive training in leadership and entrepreneurship. Another 720 individuals will be introduced to skills in non-traditional fields, helping them explore careers beyond conventional roles.
The initiative officially moved forward with the signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Minority Affairs and HPCED, marking the beginning of a structured effort to bring skill development closer to communities across the state.
What makes this programme especially meaningful is its practical approach. Participants won’t just learn skills—they’ll also be guided on how to turn those skills into sustainable income. Training areas include mountain cuisine, fashion designing, beauty therapy, and leadership development, along with business mentoring under the “Udyami Mitra” initiative.
To ensure wider reach, the programme will be rolled out in phases across different districts. Alongside training, participants will receive support with certification, guidance, and handholding to help them step confidently into self-employment or small business ventures.
For many in Himachal’s rural and semi-urban areas—where traditional job opportunities can be limited—such initiatives offer a fresh path forward. “This scheme will not only improve employability but also encourage self-reliance,” said Deepika Khatri, Executive Director of HPCED.
As the state continues to look for ways to strengthen livelihoods, especially for women and young people, programmes like PM VIKAS are becoming vital stepping stones—helping turn aspirations into real, tangible opportunities.
