Himachal Pradesh University hosts 3rd Mahima Chatranta memorial lecture on ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’
On November 11, 2024, Himachal Pradesh University’s (HPU) Department of Geography, in collaboration with the Geographical Society of Himachal Pradesh (GSHP), gathered scholars, students, and distinguished guests for the 3rd Mahima Chatranta Memorial Lecture. Held in the Vice Chancellor’s Committee Room, this annual event commemorates the life and contributions of the late Mahima Chatranta, an exceptional student whose passion for geography and academic excellence left a lasting mark on the department. Tragically, her promising journey was cut short in October 2015 at the age of 29, leaving a profound impact on her family, teachers, and friends. In her memory, the GSHP organizes this lecture each year, celebrating her legacy and inspiring future geographers.
The event commenced at 11:00 a.m., with dignitaries, scholars, and students gathering to pay tribute. Among the attendees were Mahima’s father, Mr. Dalip Chatranta, and brother, Mr. Binu Chatranta, who honored her memory with their presence. Prof. B.K. Shivram, Dean of Studies at HPU, served as the Chief Guest, while Prof. P. Arunachalam from Cochin University delivered the keynote address. Dr. Seema Chaudhary introduced the event’s theme, Viksit Bharat@2047: Opportunities and Challenges, before dignitaries on the dais lit the ceremonial lamp and the university’s Kulgeet was sung.
In his opening address, Prof. D.D. Sharma, Chairman of HPU’s Department of Geography, warmly welcomed attendees and shared heartfelt memories of his mentorship with Mahima, underscoring her dedication and talent. Prof. B.K. Shivram then addressed the audience, offering encouragement and wisdom to aspiring scholars. Following his address, Prof. Arunachalam shared his insights on India’s path to development by 2047. Drawing on historical, cultural, and economic perspectives, he highlighted India’s diverse geography as a foundation for growth and urged self-sufficiency aligned with the ‘Make in India’ initiative. He discussed the economic gap between India and China, which has grown since China’s economic reforms in 1979, noting a stark difference in per capita income. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment, advocating for a cultural shift toward equality in education and financial independence.
The memorial lecture concluded with reflections from Mr. Binu Chatranta, followed by a vote of thanks from Dr. Ram Lal, who expressed gratitude to all present. The event ended with the national anthem, leaving attendees inspired by Mahima Chatranta’s legacy and the vision of a developed India by 2047.
