Fuel Prices Set to Rise as Government Hikes Excise Duty on Petrol and Diesel
In a move that could pinch the common man’s pocket, the Central government on Monday raised excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre each. The new rates, announced by the Finance Ministry’s revenue department, will push petrol’s excise duty to ₹13 per litre and diesel’s to ₹10.
The hike could also affect household budgets, as domestic LPG cylinder prices are expected to rise by ₹50. However, the government has assured consumers that retail fuel prices will remain unchanged—at least for now.
“PSU Oil Marketing Companies have confirmed that there will be no immediate increase in petrol and diesel prices despite the excise duty revision,” the Petroleum Ministry posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The new rates will take effect from April 8, leaving many to wonder whether oil companies will eventually pass the burden onto consumers in the coming weeks.
