From Grassroots to Rajya Sabha: Anurag Sharma’s Unopposed Rise

Congress leader Anurag Sharma has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh, marking a significant political moment for the state. With no rival candidate in the fray, the Returning Officer formally declared Sharma elected and handed him the certificate after the close of nominations.

The BJP’s decision not to field a candidate cleared the path for Sharma, whose victory is being celebrated by the ruling Congress as a symbol of unity and recognition of grassroots dedication. Addressing party workers, Sharma expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the Congress leadership, admitting that the opportunity came as a surprise for someone who never imagined reaching the Upper House. He called the decision a morale booster for party workers nationwide and pledged to represent Himachal sincerely.

With a background in tourism, Sharma emphasized his commitment to strengthening tourism infrastructure and showcasing Himachal’s potential at the national level. Soon after his election, he was warmly felicitated by senior leaders and workers at the Assembly complex. Chief Minister Sukhu described the day as a proud moment, highlighting that Sharma’s rise reflected the party’s commitment to rewarding hard work at the grassroots. He revealed that Rahul Gandhi had personally selected Sharma’s name from a list of district presidents recommended by the state unit.

Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri also congratulated Sharma, urging him to strongly represent Himachal’s interests in Delhi. Taking a jab at the BJP, he noted that despite big claims of creating history in the Rajya Sabha election, the party ultimately did not even file nomination papers.
