From Fields to Fortune: How Surendra Sharma Built a Thriving Resort and Inspired a Generation

In the quiet village of Bariwadi in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, Surendra Prakash Sharma’s journey from a traditional farmer to a successful entrepreneur is nothing short of inspiring. With grit, vision, and a little help from a government scheme, he transformed his life—and now runs a flourishing resort that attracts nature lovers from across the region.

From Struggle to Smart Work

Like many in Pachhad, Surendra initially relied on farming, battling unpredictable rains and wild animals to protect his crops. But he soon realized that hard work alone wasn’t enough—he needed a smarter approach. Discovering a state-backed self-employment scheme, he saw an opportunity to turn his dreams into reality.

A Dream Resort Takes Shape

In 2022-23, Surendra secured a ₹95 lakh loan with a ₹24 lakh subsidy and a 5% interest grant. With this, he built Sangam Amusement Park—a scenic retreat near Marayog, featuring cozy cottages, a restaurant, a swimming pool, and camping tents.

Priced affordably (₹2,000/day for cottages, ₹500/day for tents, and ₹100/hour for the pool), the resort quickly became a hotspot for families, students, and retirees looking to unwind amidst nature. Birthday celebrations and retirement parties now frequently take place here, adding to its charm—and Surendra’s income.

Success & Social Impact

In just a year, the resort earned ₹25 lakhs, with a net profit of ₹20 lakhs. Beyond financial success, Surendra has created jobs for five locals, proving that rural entrepreneurship can thrive.

Visitors like Hitesh from Rajgarh praise the resort’s peaceful vibe, while students from nearby universities frequent it for weekend getaways. Grateful for the government’s support, Surendra urges other youths to seize such opportunities: “Self-reliance is possible—you just need the right plan and persistence.”

His story isn’t just about earnings; it’s a testament to how vision, coupled with policy support, can transform lives. And for the youth of Sirmaur, Surendra Sharma is living proof that dreams, no matter how big, can take root even in the smallest villages.
