Fortis Cancer Institute has successfully treated patients suffering from cancers of colon, ovary, liver and rectum

The Department of Onco Surgery of Hotting Cancer Institute is a shining light in the treatment of cancer, in which many patients have been successfully treated with modern treatments.

In a first case, a team of doctors led by Dr. Jitender Rohima, Consultant, Surgical Oncology and Robot-Padded Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mohali, recently treated a patient with locally advanced colon cancer (large intestine) through radical colon cancer surgery. An 80-year-old woman was treated. Colon cancer is a cancer of the gastrointestinal tract that arises in the right colon, transverse colon, and left colon of the large intestine.

The patient had been suffering from general weakness, anemia, weight loss, abdominal distension along with difficulty in passing stools and blood in the stool for the last six months. Upon relief, he consulted Dr. Jitender Rohila at Fortis Mohali, where PET CT scan showed a large mass on the right side of the colon attached to the small intestine ( hyodenum D2-D3 junction), which was locally Advanced (T4) indicating colon cancer. While colonoscopic biopsy was suggestive of adenocarcinoma.

Adenocarcinoma is a form of cancer that starts in the mucus glands inside organs such as the lungs, colon or even breasts.

The patient had to undergo radical colectomy (a surgical procedure to remove a part or the entire colon). Additionally, after discussion with the tumor board, Dr. Rohila performed right extended hemicolectomy (removal of the right portion of the colon), excision of a portion of the small intestine, and removal of a portion of the right kidney capsule.

Discussing the case, Dr. Rohila said, ‘Radical colectomy has been established as the gold standard surgical treatment for colon cancer (large intestine). It was a complex surgery that included the removal of the right large intestine and small intestine as well as a part of the right kidney. After six hours of surgery, she was able to walk and was discharged from the hospital after 14 days. Final pathology revealed complete removal of the tumor with negative margins. She has completely recovered and is now free from the disease.” In another case, Dr Ketan Dang, Consultant, Medical Oncology, Fortis Mohali, diagnosed with liver metastases (cancer

A 69-year-old with cancer that has spread from elsewhere in the body to the liver) as well as ovarian and rectal cancer

The woman has been treated successfully. The patient was suffering from stomach pain and bleeding from the anus for some time. unusual

Due to growth, he was referred to Fortis Mohali, where Dr. Dang examined him. Medical examination revealed that she had ovarian and rectal cancer along with liver metastases (Stage 4). Further investigation revealed that the metastases were from the rectum and liver, while the cancer had not metastasized to the ovaries. The patient received chemotherapy along with targeted therapy, which was specifically designed to target proteins that control the growth, division and spread of cancer cells. She had no side effects and PET CT showed that the tumor had disappeared. After this the patient underwent surgery and after that

The results showed that the tumor was completely removed from the rectum, ovaries and liver.

Giving information about the case, Dr. Dang said, “Targeted therapy helps in reducing the blood supply to the tumor, due to which it shrinks. Due to targeted therapy, chemotherapy also got better results. Now the patient’s own Have resumed daily routines. Targeted therapy has revolutionized cancer treatment.”
