Delegation of Geographical Society of Himachal calls on  Governor

In a meeting held today at Raj Bhawan, Shimla, a delegation from the Geographical Society of Himachal Pradesh met with Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla. The delegation, led by President Prof. D.D. Sharma, included Secretary Dr. B.R. Thakur, Treasurer Dr. Ram Lal, Dr. Seema Chaudhary, Prof. Bharti Bhagra, Ms. Nirupam, Dr. Puran Chand, Naina Sambher, and Dixit Garg. Their agenda focused on the importance of geography as a discipline, particularly in the unique socio-environmental context of Himachal Pradesh.

The delegation highlighted the critical role geography plays in understanding and managing Himachal Pradesh’s diverse landscapes, climate variations, and socio-economic dynamics. With its mountain ranges, valleys, and climate-specific ecosystems, the region faces unique environmental challenges that call for sustainable development practices. Geography, as an academic field, equips students with the knowledge to address these issues, promoting environmental awareness, sustainable practices, and informed policymaking aimed at a balanced future.

During the meeting, the delegates presented the current state of geography education in Himachal Pradesh, noting that only 13% of schools and 44% of colleges in the state currently offer geography as a subject. Given its practical relevance and employment potential, they argued that geography deserves a more prominent place in the educational system.

The delegation urged Governor Shukla to consider introducing geography as a compulsory subject in all schools and colleges across the state. This recommendation aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP), which emphasizes the need for a broad curriculum that includes diverse, job-oriented subjects. The representatives argued that a stronger emphasis on geography would not only enhance educational diversity but also prepare students for roles in environmental management, urban planning, and sustainable development.

Governor Shukla acknowledged the importance of geography in both education and regional development and assured the delegation that their request would be given due consideration. The meeting underscored the society’s commitment to advancing geographical education and fostering a knowledgeable, environmentally conscious future for Himachal Pradesh.
