CSIR-IHBT Hosts “One Week One Theme” Program on Agri-Nutrition Biotechnology
On November 5, 2024, the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) in Palampur organized a “One Week One Theme” event focused on “Agri-Nutrition Biotechnology.” This nationwide initiative aims to promote economic growth through startups, empower farmers to make India self-reliant, advance women’s empowerment, and strengthen local linkages. The program showcases technologies and innovations developed by CSIR institutions, with each institute highlighting their contributions.
Dr. Shashi Kumar Dhiman, Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh Technical University, Hamirpur, was the chief guest. He praised CSIR’s leading role in advancing science in India and emphasized the importance of collaboration among scientists, entrepreneurs, academics, and the public in making India a global leader. He also commended the institute’s efforts to strengthen farmers’ economies.
Dr. Prabodh Kumar Trivedi, Director of the Agri-Nutrition Biotechnology Mission and CSIR-CIMAP, highlighted the mission’s role in enhancing the bioeconomy through resource optimization. He discussed the success of agricultural technologies for lavender, wild marigold, and mint, which have helped farmers achieve self-reliance. He also acknowledged the contributions of other CSIR institutions involved in the mission.
Special guest Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, Director of CSIR-IIIM, Jammu, spoke about efforts to boost farmers’ incomes through lavender cultivation. Dr. Kanan Srinivasan, Director of CSIR-CSMCRI, Bhavnagar, congratulated the institute on its achievements and stressed the high expectations from science and technology in India.
Ms. Netra Meti, IAS, SDM, Palampur, appreciated the institute’s efforts in entrepreneurship development and encouraged students to pursue research.
Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of CSIR-IHBT, in his welcome address, highlighted the institute’s achievements and potential in promoting the bioeconomy. He mentioned the development of agricultural techniques for flower and aromatic crops, and the promotion of crops like asafoetida, saffron, stevia, lily, and cinnamon. He also provided updates on the expansion of the Aroma Mission and Mission Bharoop.
During the event, seeds and planting materials were distributed to farmers and entrepreneurs, and new varieties of German chamomile and lavender were introduced. Three MoUs were signed for technology dissemination, and agreements were made with ten individuals for startup and incubation facilities. A product and flower exhibition was also held.
