A Long-Awaited Opportunity Revives Hope for Aspirants in Himachal

After nearly two decades of waiting, a significant ray of hope has emerged for job seekers in Himachal Pradesh. The state’s Education Department has finally initiated the recruitment process to fill 355 Physical Education Teacher (PET) posts in government schools on a batch-wise basis. This long-overdue decision has brought relief and fresh optimism to hundreds of qualified youth holding D.P.Ed., D.P.E., and other physical education degrees, many of whom have been awaiting such an opportunity for years.

The announcement comes at a time when a large number of PET posts—around 1,011—remain vacant across government schools in the state. Candidates have welcomed the move, seeing it as a much-needed step toward strengthening the education sector while also opening up employment avenues for trained professionals.

To ensure transparency and fairness, the Directorate of School Education has released category-wise cut-off batches for the recruitment process. For candidates in the General Category, the eligibility cut-off is set up to December 31, 2005. For SC (Unreserved) candidates, it extends to December 31, 2007, while the cut-off for the EWS category has been fixed up to 2006. Separate criteria have also been determined for OBC, ST, BPL, and Wards of Freedom Fighters categories. As part of the process, candidates will need to present and verify their educational documents during counselling.

The distribution of vacancies across districts reflects varying needs within the state. Kangra district tops the list with 75 posts, followed by Mandi with 62 and Shimla with 42 vacancies. Other districts such as Una (39), Sirmaur (30), Chamba (29), and Kullu (24) also have a significant number of openings. Meanwhile, Hamirpur (18), Solan (14), Bilaspur (10), Kinnaur (7), and Lahaul-Spiti (5) have comparatively fewer posts.

Counselling sessions are scheduled to be held on June 3 and 4 across Himachal Pradesh. In a significant improvement to the process, the Education Department has introduced a more convenient system this year. Candidates will now only need to attend counselling in their home districts, a change that is expected to save both time and money. Previously, applicants often had to travel across districts to participate, leading to added financial strain and logistical challenges.

Despite this localized counselling approach, candidates will still have the flexibility to express their preferences for job locations through an “Order of Preference” form—ensuring they are not restricted in their options.

Director of School Education, Ashish Kohli, emphasized the eligibility requirements for applicants. Candidates must hold a D.P.Ed. diploma or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university. Additionally, those with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with at least 50 percent marks are also eligible to apply. As per government norms, candidates from reserved categories will receive relaxation in the minimum marks requirement.

Overall, this recruitment drive not only addresses the long-standing vacancies in the state’s education system but also brings renewed confidence to aspiring teachers who have been waiting patiently for such an opportunity.
