AYUSH Department to Connect Himachal Farmers Directly with Medicinal Herb Buyers

In a move aimed at strengthening the medicinal plant sector, the Himachal Pradesh AYUSH Department has signed a tripartite agreement to facilitate the direct sale of medicinal herbs from farmers to companies. The initiative is expected to improve market access for cultivators and reduce delays in selling their produce.

Under the new arrangement, the department will serve as a bridge between farmers and empanelled companies. Sources indicate that the participating companies have already entered into agreements with farmers for the procurement of medicinal herbs, paving the way for a more organised marketing system.

Officials believe the initiative will benefit both growers and buyers. While farmers will gain easier access to reliable markets, companies will be able to source medicinal plant material directly from cultivators. The arrangement is also expected to improve coordination in procurement and ensure better quality verification.

Himachal Pradesh is considered a rich hub for medicinal plants owing to its varied climatic conditions and natural biodiversity. Several high-value medicinal herbs, including Kutki, Jatamansi, Chirayata, Atis, Brahmi and Ashwagandha, are either naturally found or cultivated across different parts of the state.

The agreement is expected to strengthen the supply chain for medicinal herbs and encourage more farmers to take up medicinal plant cultivation as a viable livelihood option. However, the success of the initiative will ultimately depend on factors such as procurement mechanisms, prices offered to farmers and the effective implementation of the agreements on the ground.

If executed efficiently, the initiative could provide a significant boost to Himachal’s growing medicinal plant sector while creating new income opportunities for farmers in the state.
