Heavy Rain Alert Issued as Monsoon Picks Up Pace in Himachal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a cautionary note as the monsoon gathers strength across Himachal Pradesh, issuing a yellow alert for heavy rainfall from July 1 to July 3. With the weather system intensifying, both residents and tourists are being advised to stay alert and avoid venturing near rivers, streams, and landslide-prone areas.

After a brief lull, the southwest monsoon has picked up momentum once again, bringing much-needed relief from the heat in regions like Kangra, Dharamshala and Kullu. While weather conditions have remained relatively stable in other parts of the state, the coming days are expected to see widespread rainfall across multiple districts.

According to the weather department, districts like Bilaspur, Solan and Sirmaur are particularly likely to experience heavy showers during this period. Rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is expected at isolated places, which could increase the risk of flash floods and landslides.

In view of the forecast, authorities have urged people to take precautions. Locals and visitors have been advised to stay away from water bodies and unstable slopes, especially during periods of heavy rain. Those travelling through hilly areas are being asked to exercise extra caution, as sudden downpours can trigger road blockages, falling debris and hazardous driving conditions.

Weather experts have indicated that the monsoon is likely to advance further in the coming days, strengthening across neighbouring regions like Uttarakhand as well. This is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Himachal Pradesh during the first week of July, increasing the chances of consistent and widespread showers.

Officials are also encouraging people to keep an eye on regular weather updates and follow advisories issued by the administration. Staying informed and cautious, they say, will be key to staying safe as the monsoon season enters a more active phase.
