BJP Scores Big in Himachal Civic Polls, Gains Momentum Ahead of 2027 Elections
In a significant setback for the ruling Congress party in Himachal Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delivered a strong performance in the municipal elections, winning three out of the four Municipal Corporations (MCs). The results, announced on Sunday, have given the BJP a clear edge ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Often seen as a political “semi-final,” these civic polls have boosted the BJP’s confidence. The party emerged victorious in Mandi, Dharamshala, and Solan, while the Congress managed to hold on to Palampur Municipal Corporation—its only win among the four.
Voting for these urban local bodies took place on May 17, with counting completed on May 31, 2026. What makes this victory particularly noteworthy is that Municipal Corporation elections were contested on party symbols, unlike other urban local body and Panchayati Raj elections in the state, which are typically held without party affiliations.
The BJP not only retained control of Mandi but also wrested Dharamshala and Solan from the Congress, marking a major gain. Meanwhile, the Congress managed to retain Palampur, preventing a clean sweep by the BJP.
In Mandi, the BJP dominated the polls, winning 12 of the 14 wards that went to voting. The Congress secured just one seat, while a rebel Congress candidate, contesting independently, also managed a win.
Solan saw a competitive contest, with the BJP securing 10 out of 17 seats. The Congress followed with six seats, and one seat went to an Independent candidate.
In Dharamshala, the BJP once again took the lead with 11 seats, leaving the Congress with five, while one Independent candidate also won.
Palampur, however, remained a bright spot for the Congress. The party held on to the Municipal Corporation by winning 11 out of 15 wards, with the BJP securing the remaining four seats.
Reacting to the results, BJP State President Rajiv Bindal said the outcome clearly reflects the public mood in the state. Speaking to the media in Shimla, he stated that the people of Himachal Pradesh have expressed their dissatisfaction with the Congress government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
With these results, the BJP appears to have regained momentum, setting the stage for a more intense political battle as the state moves closer to the 2027 Assembly elections.
