Rain Brings Relief to Shimla, but Leaves Orchard Owners Worried

After days of intense heat, Shimla and several parts of Himachal Pradesh finally got a much-needed break as heavy rain and hailstorms swept across the region on Friday. The sudden change in weather brought cooler temperatures and much relief to residents who had been struggling with rising heat.

The rain also came as a blessing for forests that had been battling frequent fires in recent days. The showers helped douse flames in several areas, easing concerns that had been growing due to the prolonged dry spell.

But even as many welcomed the relief, fruit growers across the state were left anxious. In the higher regions, particularly around Rohru, Sharontha, and Khadapathar, strong hailstorms caused damage to orchards at a crucial time in the growing season. Apples, along with plums and pears, bore the brunt of the sudden storm.

For apple growers, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Many said the hail struck just as the fruit was developing, raising fears about reduced yield and quality in the coming harvest. In some cases, even protective anti-hail nets were damaged by the intensity of the storm, leaving orchards more vulnerable than before.

Adding to their worries, several fruit-bearing branches were also affected, which could further impact production this season. For the thousands of families who depend on horticulture for their livelihood, such weather swings are becoming an increasing concern.

While the cooler air and rain offered comfort to residents and helped calm the forests, the same weather served as a reminder of how unpredictable conditions can deeply affect those whose lives depend on the land.
