A New Path Beneath the Hills: Shimla Plans Tunnels to Ease Traffic Woes

For residents and visitors of Shimla, navigating the city’s winding roads and frequent traffic jams has long been a daily challenge. Now, there’s a ray of hope as the Himachal Pradesh government takes a major step toward easing congestion by planning two new tunnels in the heart of the capital.

Survey work has already begun for the ambitious project, which includes a crucial tunnel connecting Talland directly to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC)—a route that could drastically cut travel time, especially during peak hours and emergencies.

Backed by financial support from the Asian Development Bank, the project is expected to cost between ₹700 and ₹800 crore. A consultant has been assigned to prepare a detailed plan, laying the groundwork for what could become a game-changer in Shimla’s urban infrastructure.

The plan includes two tunnels designed to improve connectivity across key areas. The first, about 400 metres long, will link Talland to the Secretariat, while the second—stretching roughly 900 metres—will connect the Jal Shakti Department’s pump house area directly to IGMC. Four entry and exit points are also planned to ensure smooth traffic movement.

For a city perched on steep hills, where expanding roads is often not an option, such underground solutions could make a real difference. The tunnels are expected to not only reduce travel time but also ease pressure on some of the busiest roads in the city.

Part of the broader “STRIDE” State Road Project, this initiative reflects a growing focus on modernising Shimla while preserving its delicate terrain. If all goes as planned, the project could bring lasting relief to commuters and make getting around the hill town far less stressful.

For Shimla, it’s not just about building tunnels—it’s about creating smoother journeys and a better everyday experience for everyone who calls the city home or visits its scenic slopes.
