Government Schools Shine: Reforms Deliver Results in Himachal Pradesh Education

The impact of long-needed reforms in Himachal Pradesh’s education system is now clearly visible—and the results speak for themselves. Changes introduced to strengthen government schools are translating into real academic success, especially in board examinations.

In the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education Class 12 results, government school students have made a strong mark. More than 50 students from government schools found a place in the top 100 merit list this year, meaning over half of the state’s toppers come from the public education system. Of these, 48 are girls and 10 are boys—an improvement over recent years. By comparison, 2025 saw 41 girls and 9 boys in the top 100; in 2024, the figures were 23 girls and 7 boys, while 2023 recorded 33 boys and 9 girls.

The steady improvement is also reflected in pass percentages. Government schools recorded a pass rate of 92.02 percent this year, a significant jump from 88.64 percent in 2025. The progress is even more striking when seen alongside earlier years—73.76 percent in 2024 and 79.40 percent in 2023—highlighting consistent upward momentum.

A landmark moment this year was the overall Class 12 topper coming from a government school after many years. Anshit Kumar of Government Senior Secondary School, Bhawarna, scored an impressive 99.20 percent, reinforcing the message that government schools in Himachal Pradesh now stand shoulder to shoulder with private institutions. His achievement was personally acknowledged through a congratulatory phone call from the Chief Minister.

Speaking on the results, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu emphasized that the focus from the very beginning has been on systemic change—especially to ensure that students in rural areas receive quality education. He credited the success to the combined efforts of hardworking students, dedicated teachers, and parents’ trust in government-led reforms. According to him, Himachal Pradesh has risen to fifth place nationally in terms of quality education, after previously slipping to 21st. The state has also earned recognition as a fully literate state.

Over the past three years, the state government has placed education and health at the top of its priorities. Several key steps have been taken to strengthen the education sector. A separate Directorate of School Education now oversees schooling up to Class 12, while higher education institutions come under a dedicated Directorate of Higher Education. Teachers have been sent on international exposure visits to understand global education practices, and meritorious students have been given opportunities to travel abroad to broaden their outlook and prepare for future challenges.

To further boost confidence and modernize the learning environment, students in government schools have been allowed to choose smart uniforms, while the cluster system has improved the sharing and use of resources across schools.

Himachal Pradesh School Education Board Chairman Dr. Rajesh Sharma said that, following the Chief Minister’s directions, special emphasis is being placed on transparency and quality improvement in the board’s operations. The adoption of new technologies is underway to enhance learning outcomes, and these efforts are expected to bring even stronger results in the coming years.

Together, these developments underline a clear message: with the right policies, guidance, and trust, government schools can—and do—deliver excellence.
