From Fear to Harvest: Roshan Lal Secures His Farm with Chain-Link Fencing to Keep Wild Animals at Bay

In the foothills of Himachal Pradesh, the story of farmer Roshan Lal is one that resonates with anyone who has ever poured their heart into the land. For years, the hard work of Roshan Lal and his family in Joginder Nagar was at the mercy of wild animals. A single night could destroy months of labor, leaving them feeling helpless.

But today, his fields are thriving, and the fear has been replaced by hope. This transformation began with a simple piece of information he received at a local agricultural camp in his village, Talkehad. There, he learned about the Chief Minister’s Farm Conservation Plan, a government initiative designed to help farmers do exactly what he needed: protect their crops.

With guidance from the Agriculture Department, Roshan Lal took a decisive step. He installed chain link fencing around his land, creating a secure barrier against animals. The results were immediate and profound.

A Community Effort Blooms

What started as a personal solution soon grew into a community project. Last year, Roshan Lal joined forces with 16 other families in his village. Together, they erected 1200 meters of fencing, protecting about 3 acres of collective farmland.

“The difference has been incredible,” Roshan Lal shares. “Our harvest was great this time. We no longer lie awake at night worrying. Now, we’re even planning to grow cash crops to increase our income even more.”

Tangible Support for a Brighter Future

The government’s support wasn’t just advisory; it was financial. For the 1413 meters of fencing he has installed so far, Roshan Lal received a grant of nearly ₹5.92 lakh. The assistance extended beyond fencing, with grants for a brush cutter and a power weeder, and even free seeds of basmati and soybean to encourage high-value crops.

This story in Joginder Nagar is part of a larger wave of change. As agricultural expert Arun Abrol notes, in the Vikas Khand Chauntara area alone, the government has provided grants of around ₹82 lakh over the last three years for similar projects, benefiting dozens of families.

Roshan Lal’s journey is more than just a success story; it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when determined farmers and supportive government schemes work hand-in-hand. By taking that first step, he hasn’t just secured his land—he’s cultivated a future of prosperity and self-reliance for his entire family.
