Rohtang Pass closed for tourists due to hazardous winter conditions
In a crucial safety measure, the administration has officially closed Rohtang Pass for tourists as freezing temperatures have caused dangerous black ice to form on the roads. District Magistrate Ashwani Kumar issued a notification on Saturday, highlighting the serious safety risks posed by the icy conditions. Tourists will have to wait until the winter season ends to visit the iconic pass.
To enforce the closure, the online permit system for Rohtang Pass has been deactivated, and the Pukis police post at Madhi has been relocated to Gulaba. This decision followed a thorough inspection of the area conducted by SDM Manali Raman Kumar Sharma, along with police officials and the Border Roads Organization (BRO). The inspection confirmed that the road’s condition, marked by black ice, is highly unsafe for vehicle movement and poses a significant risk of accidents.
Extended Access Cut Short by Freezing Weather
Traditionally, Rohtang Pass is closed for traffic every year on November 15. However, favorable weather this season allowed vehicles to access the pass for a longer period. As temperatures plunged and icy patches began to form, authorities deemed it necessary to halt movement to prioritize public safety.
“The freezing conditions have made the road extremely unsafe. Following our inspection, we recommended closing the pass, and the District Magistrate acted promptly to issue the necessary orders,” said SDM Manali Raman Kumar Sharma.
Alternative Plans for Tourists
The closure serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by extreme winter conditions in high-altitude areas. Authorities are advising tourists to plan their trips to alternative destinations while Rohtang Pass remains closed. Popular nearby spots like Solang Valley and Gulaba offer safer options for winter enthusiasts.
By prioritizing precautionary measures, the administration aims to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of both tourists and locals. With Rohtang Pass off-limits for now, visitors are encouraged to enjoy the beauty of Himachal Pradesh’s other scenic locations until the pass reopens in spring.
