Himachal  introduces chemical-free maize flour in state-run depots: A boost for health and farming

In a groundbreaking move under the Chief Minister Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Khushal Yojana, Himachal Pradesh is set to offer chemical-free maize flour at state-run depots starting this December. This initiative aims to promote health-conscious eating while supporting local farmers. The maize flour will be available in 1 kg, 5 kg, and 10 kg packs, priced at ₹80, ₹390, and ₹780 respectively, ensuring affordability for all.

The maize used for this flour comes from crops cultivated by 1,396 farmers under the Agriculture Department’s ATMA project. Grown without chemicals, the flour offers not just affordability but also numerous health benefits. With 381.13 metric tonnes already procured, the Food Supply Department is prepared to meet the anticipated demand, distributing the flour through depot holders alongside other essential commodities.

A Healthier Alternative for Himachali Consumers

Maize flour is a nutrient-rich substitute for wheat, packed with dietary fiber, essential minerals, and antioxidants. Its natural gluten-free property makes it an excellent choice for people with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Additionally, it is rich in iron, magnesium, and vitamin B6, which aid digestion, boost energy levels, and strengthen the immune system.

For diabetics, the flour’s low glycemic index helps maintain stable blood sugar levels. Its high fiber content promotes gut health, lowers cholesterol, and assists in weight management. With these health benefits, coupled with its chemical-free preparation, maize flour becomes an invaluable addition to the diet of Himachali households.

Easier Access Through State Depots

Highlighting the convenience of this initiative, Purushottam Singh, District Controller of the Food Supply Department in Kangra, stated, “For the first time, maize flour is being made available in state depots. Consumers can now purchase it easily without relying on private shops.”

With 1,129 depots in Kangra district alone, and supply based on demand, the government is committed to ensuring consistent availability. This step simplifies access to high-quality maize flour while enhancing consumer choice.

Supporting Farmers and Strengthening the Rural Economy

Beyond offering healthier options, this initiative also provides significant support to local farmers. By sourcing maize directly from them, the government ensures fair prices and promotes sustainable farming practices. This dual focus on consumer health and farmer welfare sets a strong example for other states.

Earlier, finding maize flour was often inconvenient for consumers, who had to depend on private shops. By introducing it in depots, the state has bridged a critical gap in food accessibility. Furthermore, by prioritizing chemical-free produce, the government encourages healthier eating habits across the region.

A Model Initiative for the Future

This innovative program combines economic empowerment with public health benefits, demonstrating how thoughtful policy-making can create win-win solutions. By addressing both consumer needs and farmer interests, Himachal Pradesh is setting a benchmark for agricultural and food distribution practices, paving the way for a healthier and more sustainable future.
