Nestled about 9 kilometers from the Mandi-Pathankot National Highway in Himachal Pradesh, the village of Gumma in Joginder Nagar has a rich history tied to its unique rock salt, known as Gumma salt. Renowned for its distinctive taste and medicinal properties, this salt once made the region famous across the country.
A Rich History of Gumma Salt
Himachal Pradesh is home to only two places where rock salt is found—Gumma and Drang in Mandi district. Known as “Gumma Salt” since ancient times, this mineral treasure has played a significant role in the history of the region. Historical records reveal that the kings of various states once fought wars over the rights to Gumma’s salt quarries.
After India gained independence, the Government of India took control of these salt mines, and in 1963, Hindustan Salts Limited began salt production here. However, a massive landslide in the Gumma hills eventually made salt extraction difficult. Today, rock salt is no longer mined in Gumma, but the Drang quarry, located about 35 kilometers away, continues to produce this prized mineral.

The salt reserves in Gumma and Drang have been extensively studied, with geological data revealing the high quality of the salt. Chemical analyses show that more than 70% of the material is pure salt, containing beneficial minerals like potassium and magnesium, with minimal impurities. This makes Gumma salt a valuable resource not only for culinary use but also for its health benefits.
A Cultural and Historical Legacy
In the past, the shepherding community would pass through Gumma with their flocks, collecting salt to feed their livestock and for personal use. Stories of Gumma salt are still woven into the folk tales, music, and culture of Himachal Pradesh. People from all over the state would travel to Gumma to procure this salt, underscoring its importance in daily life.
