Welfare Officer’s Involvement in Chitta Smuggling Sparks Outrage
Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti Demands Thorough Probe and Strong Action
The alleged involvement of a Tehsil Welfare Officer in chitta smuggling has sent shockwaves across the state, raising serious concerns about the growing menace of drug trafficking. The incident has left the public deeply worried, highlighting the urgent need for a thorough investigation.
In a joint statement to the press, Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti’s State President and Secretary, Satyawan Pundir, expressed grave concern over the increasing involvement of government officials, police personnel, and even doctors in the drug trade. “When the very people meant to protect society become its destroyers, the consequences can be devastating,” they remarked.
A Call for Accountability
The committee stressed that if those responsible for curbing drug abuse are themselves complicit in smuggling, it is a matter that demands immediate and serious action from the government and administration. They have called for a detailed probe, warning that such incidents could discourage social organizations and panchayats actively working against drugs.
Despite the grim situation, the committee praised the police for their relentless crackdown on drug cartels. Law enforcement agencies at both district and state levels have been exposing trafficking networks and taking strict action. However, Pundir emphasized the need for stricter oversight of privately-run de-addiction centers, urging the government to take full control of rehabilitation efforts.
Misuse of Funds and Lack of Strategy
Expressing disappointment, he pointed out that due to a lack of a concrete action plan, central funds allocated for drug awareness campaigns remain unspent. “If money meant for such a critical issue is being returned to the center unused, it raises serious questions about the state’s commitment to fighting drug abuse,” he stated.
A Comprehensive Anti-Drug Mission
The committee has long advocated for a mission-mode approach in the fight against drugs, suggesting that the Chief Minister’s Office directly oversee and monitor efforts. Their recommendations include:
- Setting up a dedicated cell to track daily actions against drug abuse and provide intervention strategies.
- Raising awareness through educational institutions about adolescent behavioral changes, responsible parenting, and the crucial role of mothers.
- Specialized treatment for addicted criminals in jails, including detox programs, rehabilitation, and counseling.
A United Stand Against Drugs
Despite repeated suggestions, the government has yet to implement a solid action plan. To push for stronger measures, the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti is set to host a major convention on April 7, bringing together social organizations, government officials, and administrative representatives. The event aims to create a united front against drug abuse and strengthen the collective fight against this growing crisis.
