Shipki La to Reopen for India–China Border Trade Next June

In a significant development for Himachal Pradesh’s high-altitude frontier, India–China border trade through the Shipki La pass in Kinnaur is set to resume next June. The Ministry of External Affairs has given its approval, clearing the way for the historic trade route to reopen after years of inactivity.

Shipki La, perched in the remote Pooh block of Kinnaur, has long been one of the few officially notified passes for cross‑border trade with China. With the green signal from the Centre, the district administration has begun gearing up for the reopening.

Earlier this week, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma chaired a meeting with departments and stakeholders associated with the Shipki La Trade Authority. The focus was on assessing ground readiness and ironing out logistical challenges before trade resumes.

Officials reviewed a wide range of preparations, including:

  • Road connectivity between Shipki La and Namgia
  • Customs infrastructure and staffing
  • Medical and emergency services for traders
  • Registration procedures and verification of applicants
  • Coordination between various departments involved in border operations

To participate in the trade, applicants will need to register with the Tehsildar of Pooh. Only verified traders will receive passes, and documents such as ID proof, residence proof, photographs, and past trade experience will be required.

The government has also made it clear that only goods notified by India will be allowed for import and export. Customs officials will circulate the approved list and conduct thorough checks on all consignments at the border.

Security will be jointly handled by the Indo‑Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and local police to ensure smooth and safe operations once the route becomes active again.
