Prof. Devinder Sharma Takes Charge as APG Shimla University Vice-Chancellor
A.P. Goyal Shimla University has welcomed a seasoned academic leader at its helm with the appointment of Prof. Devinder Sharma as the new Vice-Chancellor. Bringing over 26 years of experience in higher education, research, teaching, and academic administration, Prof. Sharma’s appointment marks a significant milestone for the university as it looks to strengthen its academic and research ecosystem.
Prof. Sharma recently retired from Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, where he served as Professor in the Department of Commerce until June 2026. During his distinguished tenure at HPU, he held several key leadership positions, including Chairman of the Department of Commerce for two terms, from 2016 to 2018 and again from 2024 to 2026. Since 2025, he has also been a member of the University’s Academic Council, contributing to important academic and policy decisions.
Known for his multidisciplinary academic background, Prof. Sharma holds M.Com., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in Commerce, along with postgraduate diplomas in Personnel Management and Labour Welfare, Journalism and Mass Communication, and Human Rights. His academic journey further includes master’s degrees in Journalism and Mass Communication as well as Ecology and Environment, reflecting a broad intellectual outlook.
Beyond the classroom, Prof. Sharma has earned a reputation as a dedicated researcher and mentor. Over the years, he has guided 23 Ph.D. scholars to successful completion, while five research scholars are currently pursuing their doctoral work under his supervision. He has also mentored around 60 M.Phil. students and numerous postgraduate learners across Commerce, MBA, and related disciplines.
His research contributions are equally impressive. With 124 research papers and 16 books to his credit, Prof. Sharma has made a lasting contribution to academic literature. He has been associated with several national and international journals and has served as the Chief Editor of CONNEX RESEARCH, a multidisciplinary research journal.
Prof. Sharma’s commitment to advancing knowledge is reflected in the nine sponsored research projects he has successfully undertaken with support from organisations such as the UGC, Samagra Shiksha, SSA, Himachal Pradesh University, and the Himachal Pradesh Government’s Department of Welfare. Two additional research projects are currently underway.
Among his notable publications is the widely recognised book, “Research Methodology: Procedures and Application for Researchers,” a valuable resource for aspiring scholars. His academic achievements have earned him several national and international honours, including the International Education Excellence Award in Finance Management and the Best Research Presentation Award at an international tourism conference held in Bali.
With decades of experience, a strong research record, and proven administrative capabilities, Prof. Devinder Sharma is expected to lead APG Shimla University into a new phase of academic growth and innovation.
