National Science Day is celebrated on 28 February at CSIR-IHBT, Palampur

The celebration of National Science Day at CSIR-Himalayan Bioresource Technology Institute in Palampur marked the anniversary of Dr. Chandrashekhar Venkatraman’s discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ on February 28, 1928, for which he was later awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. This year’s theme, “Indigenous Technology for Developed India,” underscored the importance of leveraging native innovations for national progress.

During the event, Prof. S.O.P. Sharma, Honorary Professor and Former Vice Chancellor of CSK Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur, commended the institute for its significant contributions to research, entrepreneurship development, and rural economy. Highlighting India’s prowess in indigenous technology, he cited achievements such as the development of the COVID-19 vaccine and the Chandrayaan mission as exemplars. He urged the institute’s scientists to continue their efforts towards societal upliftment and aimed for India’s development by 2047.

Addressing the audience, Prof. Purnanand Gupta Sharma, Dean Faculty at the National Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali, emphasized the need to promote eco-friendly technologies and addressed the harmful impact of plastic pollution. He elucidated on methods to decompose and repurpose plastic, stressing the importance of enzymatic experiments.

Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of the Institute, outlined its significant achievements and ongoing efforts to promote science, technology, and innovation. He highlighted initiatives aimed at increasing farmers’ income through innovative practices and skill development programs for rural communities.

The event also featured collaborations with Aerodyne India Venture Pvt. Ltd. and UNISEED Research Consultant Pvt. Ltd., facilitating knowledge transfer in drone technology and food technology, respectively.

In addition to institutional activities, National Science Day served as an opportunity for community engagement. Students and teachers from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Mandi, and Vikram Batra Government College, Palampur, participated in educational programs to learn about the institute’s research endeavors.

The presence of institute staff, research students, local dignitaries, and media representatives contributed to the success of the celebration, showcasing the collective commitment to advancing science and technology for the betterment of society.
