Light rain and snowfall in higher and mid-hill regions of Himachal on Dec 4 and 5 : IMD

Himachal Pradesh has just endured one of its driest Novembers in recent memory. Apart from a brief spell of light rain and snow at the start of the month, the skies stayed clear, leaving farmers, orchardists, and tourism operators struggling. With temperatures now plunging below zero, the state is bracing for a sharper winter turn.

December Brings Hope

  • The Meteorological Centre Shimla has forecast light rain and snowfall in higher and mid-hill regions on December 4 and 5.
  • Lower and plain areas are expected to remain clear, but the change could bring much-needed relief to residents.

Foggy Mornings Ahead

  • A yellow alert has been issued for dense fog on December 1 and 2.
  • Areas near the Bhakra Dam in Bilaspur and the Balh valley in Mandi are expected to see heavy fog in the mornings, prompting warnings for motorists to drive cautiously.

Impact on Farming, Orchards, and Tourism

  • Farmers have struggled to sow wheat and rabi crops due to lack of soil moisture. Only those with irrigation facilities managed to plant, while most remain dependent on rainfall.
  • Orchardists are worried as snowfall is crucial for apple and other fruit crops.
  • Tourism operators are disappointed, with fewer visitors arriving in the absence of snow. A fresh spell could revive business and bring cheer to the industry.

Rivers Begin to Freeze

  • In high-altitude areas like Lahaul–Spiti, rivers, streams, and waterfalls have started freezing.
  • Water on roads has created black ice conditions, making travel risky. Authorities have urged drivers to remain cautious.

Coldest Spots

  • Tabo recorded the lowest temperature at –4.7°C, followed by Kukumseri at –4.6°C.
  • Other chilly readings include Samdo (–3.1°C), Bhuntar (1.3°C), Kalpa (1.4°C), Manali (1.9°C), and Seobagh (0.3°C).
  • Even popular towns like Shimla (8.5°C) and Kufri (8.8°C) are feeling the bite of winter.
