Historic Kullu Dussehra: A grand gathering of deities and tradition
The revered idol of Lord Raghunath, brought to Kullu from Ayodhya in 1650, continues to be at the heart of the grand Kullu Dussehra celebrations. This iconic festival, which honors Raghunath, is often referred to as a “Mahakumbh” of deities, drawing divine figures from across the region. Some deities have traveled from as far as 200 kilometers to take part in this traditional festivity. Ensuring the safety and security of this monumental event, 1,400 security personnel will be deployed, with the added surveillance of drones and CCTV cameras.
The 374-year-old international Kullu Dussehra is steeped in rich traditions and deep-rooted beliefs. Since the idol of Lord Raghunath was brought to Kullu, hundreds of deities from the district have gathered annually in his honor. Until 1960, these deities participated at their own expense, with their followers bringing supplies from home and often undertaking journeys of 12 to 15 days to reach the festival. Thanks to improved road infrastructure, these long journeys now take only a week.
In 1960, the Punjab government offered a token honorarium of Rs 10,000 to the attending deities, with each receiving between Rs 20 and Rs 30. Over time, the international Kullu Dussehra has grown in prominence, becoming a major attraction for tourists from both India and around the world. This year, the Dussehra Festival Committee has extended invitations to 332 deities, many from the remote areas of Outer Seraj, Ani, Nirmand, and the Shangarh Valley in Sainj, with some walking up to 200 kilometers to attend.
Notable deities attending from afar include Chambu, Shershai Nag, Saptrishi, Devta Khudijal, Vyasa Rishi, Kot Pajhari, Takarasi Nag, Shringa Rishi, Balu Nag, Sheshnag Banjar, Mata Budi Nagin, Manu Rishi, Chotru, Shamshari Mahadev, Bishlu Nag, and Jogeshwar Mahadev. Mata Hidimba has already arrived in Ramshila, Kullu, and Bijli Mahadev is now at Sultanpur. The event is poised to be a grand celebration, with the perfect blend of spirituality, tradition, and modern security measures ensuring a smooth experience for all.
